SIBUR to focus expandable polystyrene production within Russia

Russian petrochemicals producer Sibur plans to focus its expandable polystyrene production on the domestic market, company President Dmitry Konov told delegates at the K-2010 plastics fair in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The company will begin production of EPS from its 50,000 mt/year plant in Perm by the end of November, the company said.

It plans to export some of the styrene feedstocks produced at the site, but it will take advantage of increased demand for EPS in Russia to supply the domestic market.
"The EPS is targeted for Russia based on increased consumption per capita. There is a significant amount of EPS coming in from Europe and Asia. What we plan is import substitution. We have competitively priced EPS," Konov said.

Demand for EPS is growing in Russia, as well as in eastern and central Europe from both the construction and home renovation markets, market sources say.

The Russian company will also produce 220,000 mt/year of ethyl-benzene and 135,000 mt/year of styrene monomer in Perm. This will ensure that the company is net long by about 85,000 mt/year of styrene.

It plans to export these styrene volumes to Europe and Asia via Vienna-based company Citco, which it purchased in 2009, the company said.
