SIBUR launches three new climate projects with a combined impact of over 700 kt of CO₂

21 January 2026. Climate projects at SIBUR's enterprises Kazanorgsintez, Voronezhsintezkauchuk, and SiburTyumenGaz will reduce CO₂ emissions by an amount equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of the city of Tobolsk. The projects have already been registered in the Russian Carbon Units Registry.

At the Kazan facility, greenhouse gas emissions are being reduced through technological modernisation and improved energy efficiency. The reconstruction of the rectification unit has significantly lowered steam consumption. The climate project at Kazanorgsintez is scheduled to run until 2033.

The project at SiburTyumenGaz is also based on technological modernisation. Reduced electricity consumption for gas compression has been achieved by upgrading the gas-dynamic components of compressor units, including replacement of flow path parts. This project is planned for implementation until 2031.

At Voronezhsintezkauchuk, CO₂ emissions were reduced through optimising production technology. The degassing process now works with enhanced energy efficiency due to modifications in how the polymerisate is introduced into the degasser. This climate project is also scheduled to run until 2031.

"Improving industrial energy efficiency is pivotal for transforming the Russian economy in the coming years. We are committed to implementing climate projects based on environmental modernisation at Russian enterprises. Today, energy efficiency is not merely a matter of resource conservation – it is a fundamental pillar for the competitive power and sustainable development of our economy," said Alexander Kraevoy, Acting Director of the Department for Competition, Energy Efficiency, and Environment at the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia.

"When assessing the performance of the Russian Carbon Units Registry, we prioritise the quality of climate projects over their quantity. Key criteria include an ambitious yet achievable impact, realistic implementation timelines, and the degree of company engagement at every stage," said Oksana Gogunskaya, CEO of Kontur, the authorised operator of the Carbon Units Registry.

Addressing climate change remains a top priority for SIBUR, and the Company is pursuing systematic efforts in this area. SIBUR's portfolio currently includes 12.2 million validated carbon units, 5.3 million of which have been verified. The number of climate projects has reached twelve. Once verified, SIBUR-issued carbon units become available to Russian and international buyers through the registries.

In 2025, SIBUR executed 39 transactions involving carbon units through various mechanisms, including direct sales, exchange-based trading, sales of products with offset carbon footprints, and carbon footprint compensation. The Company also contributed to the successful implementation of the Sakhalin Experiment, conducting a series of transactions with local enterprises for offsetting under emissions quotas, as well as offsetting the carbon footprint of all order pickup points on the island in partnership with RWB (the merged entity of Wildberries and Russ).

Last year, SIBUR offset the carbon footprint of all its corporate events, as well as the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, the Nevsky International Ecological Congress, the Islands of Sustainable Development forum in Sakhalin, and the first regional volunteer forum in Tomsk. Key milestones in the Company's climate agenda included the recognition of SIBUR-PETF as Russia's first carbon-neutral enterprise, the organisation of several carbon-neutral polypropylene shipments to China, and the development of green solutions for the construction sector.

On top of that, in 2025 the Company carried out a comprehensive study of Russia’s carbon market in partnership with Kept.

"Today, Russia's carbon market is an evolving instrument that opens new horizons of opportunity for industrial companies. Green solutions implemented in production processes and environmental modernisation not only help reduce the environmental impact but also enable the creation of projects with clearly measurable effects, the expansion of carbon unit portfolios, and active participation in developing the country's carbon market. We actively leverage this instrument and in doing so we adhere to the principles set out in our Sustainable Development Strategy,” said Nadezhda Galaktionova, Director of Sustainable Development at SIBUR.
